ONE PLUS 8 / PRO SERIES
Deep Dive: Exploring the performance of a true flagship hardware setup
Hi friends, As most of you already know, OnePlus has focused on creating a “fast and smooth” user experience since day one. These two words, alongside Never Settle, represent the foundation of our “burdenless” design philosophy: a device should never hold users back or slow them down. But how is that implemented into a product?
We had already been making things “fast and smooth” for a long time, but this was officially set as a core strategy of our product development back in 2015. Since then, it has been tightly woven into OnePlus’ DNA, guiding the decision making for OnePlus products, from hardware selection to software configuration.
Smoothness is largely found through system performance. As a premium smartphone brand, OnePlus has always made its flagship products with the most robust hardware components to deliver smooth, fluid system performance. So, naturally, with the OnePlus 8 series, we started by laying a foundation with the best hardware available.
Having announced our upcoming 120 Hz Fluid Display back in January, today I want to focus on what sits beneath that stunning, true-to-life screen – our most powerful setup to date: the Snapdragon 865 SoC, coupled with LPDDR5 and UFS 3.0, for a dramatic increase in system performance, while reducing power consumption. I know this may seem like a bold claim, so let’s go through the data:
The industry-leading Snapdragon 865 mobile platform improves over what was an already powerful SoC, offering a 25% increase in CPU performance, a 25% rise in GPU rendering times, while being 25% more energy efficient. It also offers a 16% reduction in power consumption when shooting videos and a 40% increase in video noise pixel processing power. Its AI performance is at least twice as fast as its predecessor, thanks to the Hexagon 698 DSP, which also offers 35% better power efficiency.
The newest generation of smartphone RAM – LPDDR5 – also makes its debut, maintaining OnePlus’ tradition of being among the first manufacturers to carry the latest RAM technology available. The transfer rate reaches a blazing 6,400Mbps at a bandwidth as high as 51.2GB/s. LPDDR5 is also built with power consumption in mind, achieving a 45% lower power consumption when compared with the previous generation.
UFS 3.0 flash storage might already be the current standard for flagship smartphones, capable of dramatically raising read and write speeds to about 1,700MB/s. But we’ve taken it a step further. Based on UFS 3.0, we’ve also added two new technologies to the mix—Turbo Write and Host Performance Booster.
. Turbo Write uses the upper section of the ROM's storage as a high-speed read/write interval. Here, in theory, each read/write will enter this high-speed buffer, and then proceed to the next command of data transfer.
. In addition, HPB (Host Performance Booster) can further improve the random read performance after extended use.
But hardware alone can only take you so far. In fact, “fast and smooth” has never been achieved by just throwing the best components together. We put a relentless focus on software optimization, maximizing the performance of the hardware combination by only adding the features that truly matter to you, making an even better flagship smartphone experience.
This drive to bring out the true power offered by the top-of-the-line specs comes to life with our specialized R&D team, literally named the “FSE Team” (Fast, Smooth, Efficient). We set up this team in 2016 with the sole focus on system optimizations. Its only objective is to ensure that OnePlus devices can deliver the fastest and smoothest experience possible, in a continuous and stable manner. In fact, we don’t even release products until they meet, or better yet exceed, the extremely high standards we set for ourselves.
We’ve also recently announced that the upcoming lineup would be 5G-enabled, allowing all of you to be among the first users in the world to enjoy the unprecedented speedy experience offered by the new generation of communications technology, leveraging the performance offered by the premium hardware and software combination of the OnePlus 8 series.
Performance is only one of the many aspects that make the OnePlus 8 series a true flagship lineup. I can’t wait to tell you more about it on April 14, in our online launch event. Until then, Never Settle.
Going All In on 5G
Today I want to speak about our commitment to 5G and our long term investment. Since we started our research back in 2016, we had one commitment in mind which was to work towards bringing innovative 5G technology to users around the globe. We’ve been investing in 5G for several years as a top priority in our product strategy, and we see this as the promising direction going forward.
I’m proud to announce that our next launch will have a full-fledged 5G lineup. We also have been investing USD 30 Million towards developing 5G research labs and further drive product innovation efforts to take our commitment forward. We have set up two 5G labs to push 5G technology and adoption forward in global wide, allowing OnePlus users to enjoy fast and smooth experiences on 5G.
A lot has happened since we first started work on 5G - from beginning our lead in 5G research in as early as 2016 to making our next launch lineup 5G ready. During this journey, we have made many firsts throughout the 5G era, such as the world’s first 5G tweet, and our display of 5G cloud gaming which some of you may have experienced at MWC 2019. Soon after that, we released our first 5G device, the OnePlus 7 Pro in the UK with EE and then in Finland with Elisa. And finally, towards the end of 2019, the OnePlus 7 Pro 5G became the first 5G smartphone to be launched in USA with Sprint.
Following the dawn of the 5G era, I believe that the user experience of smartphones will change accordingly. I believe that the various qualities of 5G like low latency and cloud services will help us achieve a truly burdenless experience in daily use. 5G communications are still at an early stage of development which gives us a lot of scope for innovations and improvement.
To support both hardware and software research and development, we started operations at our 5G labs in Shenzhen and Taipei where our main focus is to provide a better user experience with 5G on OnePlus devices. Moreover, we’re now also conducting 5G testing efforts at our new R&D center in Hyderabad, India, which was established last year.
We’ve achieved many firsts with 5G, and we’re glad to have shared that experience with you. Now, as we take a fresh step forward with global 5G support across our next product lineup, and with our commitment towards R&D in our 5G labs, I invite you to be a part of this journey.
We’re going all in 5G. Never Settle.
Deep Dive: 120 Hz Fluid Display - the best you’ll lay eyes on in 2020
At OnePlus, we believe that every part of our device should provide the best experience possible to our users. With the OnePlus 7 Pro, we started pushing the envelope in display experience by introducing our 90 Hz Fluid Display, finely tuned to achieve a record-breaking A+ Top Tier Display Rating from DisplayMate. Today, we have finished the development of our next-generation display, and I’m excited to tell you more about it.
The spirit of “Never Settle” is not about specs alone. The smoothest smartphone display must also be able to deliver a superior visual quality and viewing comfort. We’re sure that OnePlus's new 120 Hz Fluid Display will be the best you’ll lay eyes on in 2020.
Engineering the most advanced 120 Hz display panel in the industry
Following the 2K+ 90 Hz Fluid Display of the OnePlus 7 Pro, OnePlus has once again cooperated with Samsung Display to tailor a unique AMOLED display with the most rigorous specs in the industry, including a breathtakingly smooth 120 Hz refresh rate. The display uses the latest generation of organic light-emitting materials, with a peak brightness of more than 1000 nits and a much longer lifetime. In addition, we’ve raised the touch sampling rate to an industry high of 240 Hz for a more responsive touch experience.
Our R&D team also developed an exclusive optimization solution that can increase the rendering speed of a single frame with 7%. In testing, OnePlus's 120 Hz display has yielded significantly better results than other existing high refresh rate displays in the industry on measures of click response, scroll response, and accuracy.
Unprecedented smoothness in video playback
After numerous system optimizations, many major apps will now be able to take full advantage of the new 120 Hz refresh rate. But, for videos, there’s an additional hurdle. Most video content is still produced at either 24fps or 30fps, with a small portion of content in 60fps.
To address this problem, we’re including MEMC technology to deliver smoother video playback. MEMC is a technology featured in high-end TVs that uses real-time algorithmic adjustments to insert additional frames to a video file, enabling something shot at 24 or 30fps to play at 60 or even 120fps.
MEMC technology is more demanding in terms of computational power and algorithm processing, making it very difficult to simply carry over from TVs to smartphones. But by using a hardware-based MEMC solution, OnePlus has managed to elevate frame rates to 60 or even 120fps with low power consumption, providing a seamless, more fluid viewing experience for users.
True-to-life color display and support for up to 1 billion shades of color
With a display that offers greater color accuracy, users will see colors as they are meant to be seen. For designers, photographers, and all creators, top-notch color accuracy is essential for creative work.
JNCD, which means “Just Noticeable Color Difference", is an indicator for measuring color accuracy used by companies including DisplayMate. Current professional displays can achieve a JNCD of less than 2, with some high end models achieving less than 1. By professionally tuning the color display, OnePlus was able to achieve an industry-leading JNCD ratio of less than 0.8 for every single 120 Hz Fluid Display. With a near-perfect display performance rating, users and creators will be able to edit and render images with absolute confidence.
OnePlus's 120 Hz Fluid Display also provides support for 10-bit color, providing 1,024 shades of each primary color and 1.07 billion possible colors. This is 64 times as many colors than are supported on mainstream smartphone devices, giving users fuller, more natural gradients when viewing content, and creators more confidence to accurately display the intended color spectrum.
In order to reach industry-leading color accuracy standards, we have added an additional automatic color calibration machine to the production line. By adding an extra 30 seconds to the production time, each display panel is automatically calibrated for color accuracy before it’s released.
Our upcoming 120 Hz Fluid Display is part of our commitment to “Fast and Smooth.” You, our community, are what drives us to move forward and innovate, and we can’t wait for you to try it out.
Never Settle.
